Protein innovations strongly represented at HIE 2016

FrieslandCampina Ingredients recently participated in Health Ingredients Europe 2016, the global meeting place for nutritional food and beverage innovation (Frankfurt, 29 November – 1 December). For sports and weight management the global trend is to increase protein levels. This was also clearly visible at the HIE where protein innovations were strongly represented.

Overnight recovery concepts                    

Most sports recovery formulas focus on fast muscle recovery. What we have learned from elite athletes, however, is that the importance of overnight recovery is underestimated. At the HIE we showcased our new “overnight recovery concepts” that allow athletes to extend their recovery period for up to seven hours after having consumed them; they have a high protein content and they taste great. The first concept was a vanilla protein overnight recovery drink including Excellion Calcium Caseinate S; the second one was a chocolate recovery shake containing Excellion Calcium Caseinate I. Both ingredients are ideal recovery proteins due to the sustained release of amino acids during the night.

At the HIE we also hosted the following conferences :

• ‘Optimizing trends in performance nutrition’ exploring trends in specialised sports nutrition and explaining how the elite athletes use these products to improve performance and recovery time.

• ‘How to improve the sensory characteristics of your protein shake’. Protein shakes are a common application for providing nutritional benefits. FrieslandCampina has a dedicated Sensory department which has conducted a landscape study of protein shakes and is highlighting the benefits of optimized sensory attributes to food manufacturers.
